Auch in der UA Mailingliste ist man der Meinung das Bad Monkeys von Matt Ruff ein ideales UA Buch ist.
I would like to recommend Bad Monkeys as a perfectly UAble book, by Matt Ruff (who wrote Sewer, Gas & Electric). A fantastic book, Matt Ruff really shows how well he can write.
I can’t do much better than quote the back cover, really: „Jane Charlotte has been arrested for murder. She says she’s a member of a secret organizations devoted to fighting evil. She says she’s working with The Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons — aka “Bad Monkeys”. Her confession lands her in the jail’s psychiatric wing and earns her countless hours of poking, probing, and questioning by a professional. But is Jane crazy or lying? Or is she playing a whole different game altogether?“
It doesn’t have the mysticism of a Tim Powers book, but there are mad bag ladies with secret knowledge, Scary Clowns (yes, capitalised) and much, much more perfectly viable UA material.
Here’s the author’s page about it, including the first (short) chapter: http://home.att.net/~storytellers/badmonkeys.html
(And if you haven’t read any of his other books I heartily recommend doing that — Set This House In Order for a unique and intriguing look inside the head of a person with multiple person disorder (well, ok, perhaps not that unique; you’ll have to share it with about a dozen other ‚persons‘), or the hilarious Sewer, Gas & Electric: The Public Works Trilogy, because, in the end, what other book features a resurrected Ayn Rand captured in a holographic lamp?)
